The National Theater’s revival of “Angels in America,” with a cast that includes Nathan Lane and Andrew Garfield, will land on Broadway this season, with the production booking a spring run at the Neil Simon Theater.
The revival of Tony Kushner’s epic two-parter was a buzzy success in London, and seemed a good candidate to hop the pond for a Broadway run. Lane is one of Broadway’s most reliable box office draws, and director Marianne Elliott staged both “War Horse” and “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” two of Broadway’s most successful plays in recent years.
The 18-week run in New York brings over other members of the London cast as well, with Lane and Garfield leading an ensemble that includes Susan Brown, Denise Gough, Amanda Lawrence, James McArdle, and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. (Full casting remains to be announced.)
Pulitzer winner “Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes” is one of the theater world’s biggest landmarks of the last 30 years, with the Tony winning original staging in 1993, directed by George C. Wolfe, featuring a cast that included Jeffrey Wright, Joe Mantello, Ron Leibman, Marcia Gay Harden and Stephen Spinella.
Tim Levy, the director of NT America, and Jordan Roth, the president of Jujamcyn Theaters, produce the Broadway staging Elliot & Harper, Elliott and Chris Harper’s new production company.
The 18-week run of “Angels in America” begins previews Feb. 23 ahead of a March 21 opening.
