Glenn Close believes in Hollywood’s ‘powerhouse women’

Glenn Close is proud of how far women in Hollywood have come because when she started her career almost 40 years ago, things were considerably harder.

“For the most part in my career, I’ve created things for myself,” the 70-year-old “Sunset Boulevard” actress told Page Six in an interview on Thursday. “I produced and I developed scripts. I’ve … not necessarily sat around and waited for the phone to ring.”

She explained that early on in her career, after her first movie, she was offered a “Movie of The Week” deal for TV.

“I said I wanted to do it, but my agent at the time said it’s going to ruin your movie career,” she told us. “My answer’s always been, ‘But what about Judi Dench?’ She’s done everything her whole career. Why can’t we do that? Why can’t we go from stage to TV to film?”

As it turns out, you can and that’s exactly what Close has done. Over her career, she’s taken home three Emmys, three Tonys and been nominated for an Oscar six times.

Close tells us how much she enjoyed watching women winning big at the Emmy awards last weekend.

“Again and again, I was reminded of what really wonderful work is being done on television and that to me is really exciting,” she said. “First of all, there’s so much material out there, there’s so much demand for content and anytime a movie like … ‘Big Little Lies’ … that stars four women and it did so incredibly well, it just helps with the momentum and the ability for other things like that to get made.”

She added, “And the woman who directed … ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ … my god that was a fantastic, beautifully directed piece … There are real powerhouse women that are coming along and I think they’re going to make a huge mark and it’s going to make a difference. It’s going to inspire a lot of young women and keep a lot of us going.”
