Katharine McPhee and David Foster’s romance is for ‘publicity’

The May-December romance between Katharine McPhee and David Foster may be less than it appears.

She’s 33. He’s 68. What else but unbridled passion could bridge the 35-year gap?

“Publicity,” scoffed a former friend of multiplatinum-album producer Foster. “They are using each other.”

The couple sat courtside as the Lakers beat the Grizzlies on Sunday night in Los Angeles, and were photographed smiling and gazing into each other’s eyes.

But my source said that Foster might not have been keeping his eye on the ball because he isn’t much of a sports fan: “I bet he couldn’t name one player on the Lakers.”

The next night, the couple went to paparazzi-plagued Craig’s in Beverly Hills, Calif., where they were photographed again.

In Health magazine, the former “Smash” star says she’s “pretty single,” whatever that means, and points out that Foster produced her first single 12 years ago. “I’m really, really fond of him, and I think he’s an incredible person,” she said. “People can say whatever they want.”

Foster has been working since 2008 on a musical about the iconic cartoon character Betty Boop, a part that would be perfect for McPhee.

As for the Instagram caption by Foster’s daughter Erin under a photo of the couple — “Excited about my new step mom” — McPhee said, “So we were sitting there at the table and she said, ‘Do you wanna, like, do a thing?’ And I was like, ‘OK.’ So I mean, we were in on it. She’s so funny.”
