The 2016 election tore the Baldwin family apart

Hailey Baldwin was heartbroken after the 2016 election — not just because Hillary Clinton, her chosen candidate, lost, but because it caused so much feuding within her famous family.

Baldwin’s father, Stephen, is an outspoken Donald Trump-supporting Republican, while her uncle Alec became a “Saturday Night Live” staple for skewering Trump onscreen and off.

Stephen previously revealed he hadn’t spoken to Alec since the 2016 election, but insisted that once Alec got the tax breaks that Trump promised, Alec would join him in supporting the POTUS. (Stephen alleged that it was Alec’s choice to not speak and urged him to retire his Trump impression. He also publicly beefed with Alec and fellow Baldwin brother Billy on Twitter.)

The division within not just the country, but also the Baldwin brood, was particularly damaging for Hailey and her older sister, Alaia.

“That was a very hurtful situation for me. I love my father, he’s an amazing dad, but we so strongly disagreed on [the election],” Hailey told The Sunday Times. “He and my sister strongly disagreed on it. My sister’s husband, like everyone on our side, just doesn’t agree with him. We don’t talk about it now. It’s not worth the argument.”

Still, while Hailey won’t argue with her father, she’s open to having a dialogue in the public sphere and using her platform to further causes she supports.

“Everything that’s happening in the world is so crazy, but if any positivity is coming out of it, it’s teaching young people to stand up and be vocal,” she said. “We’re the next generation who have the access and power and we have a lot of drive. I’ve been trying to find ways to get more involved with people my age and make changes for things that matter.”
