New York’s ‘80s club world fixtures are mourning the death of Stephen Saban — the seminal Details magazine nightlife columnist and onetime club doorman.
Michael Musto posted on Facebook that Saban died “due to complications from pancreatic cancer,” and explained: “When I visited him not long ago, Saban asked me to present my write-up of him from my 1986 book ‘Downtown’ as his obit.”
In the excerpt, Musto said Saban “became recognized as ‘the Boswell of the night’ by New York magazine and ‘the Noel Coward of the ‘80s’ by Newsweek.”
A 2015 New York Times profile on Saban and a GoFundMe site that was supported by his many friends, including RuPaul, called him a “scene-maker and star-maker in the era of Madonna, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.”
Saban more recently ran the blog for World of Wonder.
