In the aftermath of President Trump’s joint news conference with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin, actress Glenn Close said she’s terrified about the fate of the US Constitution under his administration, according to a report.
“It’s tricky and it’s fragile and that’s why it’s scary for me,” Close said Monday night, according to The Hill.
“I feel that our Constitution is not being defended and I feel that many of the things that this country was founded on … [are] being threatened,” she added.
The six-time Oscar nominee was at a special Washington, DC, screening of her new flick “The Wife” at the AMC Loews theater in Georgetown.
Close, who played the VP to Harrison Ford’s president in “Air Force One,” said she looks for leaders with a “high intellectual life” and a “real moral sense” — and who appreciate how “fragile” the Constitution is.
“Well, I’m a great reader of history, so, you know, I’ve read the Churchill biographies and I’ve read the John Adams books and I’ve read about Teddy Roosevelt, so those … are the standards that I expect from our leaders,” she said.
The film — in which she stars alongside Jonathan Pryce and Christian Slater — is about a fictional Nobel Prize-winning author’s wife who re-examines her life.
Close said when it comes to the #MeToo movement sweeping the nation, this movie “fits right in there.”
“My two grandmothers didn’t go to college, my mother didn’t go to college. I was actually the first girl in my family to go to college,” she said in discussing what it meant to portray a female character coming of age before feminism in the ’50s.
The movie, whose screening was presented by Sony Pictures Classic and the Middleburg Film Festival, will open Aug. 24.
