Kevin Smith thought Drake’s ‘Degrassi’ music video was a scam

SAN DIEGO, CA — The actor who played J.T. Yorke on “Degrassi” wasn’t the only one who thought Drake reaching out to be in his recent “I’m Upset” music video was a scam.

Kevin Smith, who was in just five episodes of “Degrassi” in 2005, says Drake’s team reached out to his longtime on-screen partner Jason Mewes’ agent to see if they wanted to be in the music video and at first they both thought it was a scam. However, Smith told the agent to follow up “just in case” it was real.

“It was incredible to see all of them again grown up,” Smith told Page Six during the San Diego Comic-Con #IMDboat party on Friday night.

Smith then praised Drake, who starred on the long-running Canadian show before launching his rap career.

“He was so lovely and gracious,” Smith said, explaining that Drake made sure every person on set was having a good time and worked around everyone’s schedule.

At the end of the shoot Drake thanked Smith and Mewes for flying in and Smith joked, “Um, no, thank you for making us relevant again.”

The music video for “I’m Upset” dropped in June and featured almost all of the cast from “Degrassi: The Next Generation” returning to their school for a 10-year reunion.

While most people came back there were a couple faces missing. Drake said Ryan Cooley, who played J.T. Yorke, thought it was a scam, while Daniel Clarke and Mike Lobel say they were not contacted to be involved in the project.
