Why Bob Odenkirk got drunk for the first time in 30 years

“Better Call Saul” star Bob Odenkirk got drunk for the first time in over 30 years to narrate the story of Steve Dahl’s disco demolition on Comedy Central’s “Drunk History.”

“It was scary for me to get drunk,” the 55-year-old actor revealed at the PaleyFest NY panel on Monday with “Drunk History” co-creator Derek Waters, comedian Amber Ruffin and moderator Jack McBrayer. “Derek knows. We had a lot of conversations about it. I almost backed out because I haven’t been drunk in a long, long time.”

He continued, “Not that I was going for a record but it was probably over 30 years.”

Odenkirk explained that as a father, he had hesitations about getting wasted on TV.

“I have kids who are teenagers, both in college now, and I was a little worried about them seeing me on TV really drunk — like — vomiting drunk,” he said.

Despite his reluctance, Odenkirk decided that the disco demolition story was an important narrative for him to tell on the show as it was a part of his childhood.

“It was a tough call to do it and I just bit the bullet and the worm, and Derek was very protective of me, but I did drink two and a half double gin and tonics and four shots of tequila,” he said. “I was definitely drunk.”

Also revealed during the panel discussion was what viewers could expect to see in Season 6 of “Drunk History.”

Waters disclosed that the show’s next season would tell the stories of Little Rock Nine, Martha the Mouth and Sam Cooke among others. Additionally, there would be a parody episode of “Are You Afraid of the Dark” and in another episode, Ruffin will step in as a guest host.

“We have so many [stories] for Season 6 that I’m really excited for you guys to see,” Waters said.
