Dwyane Wade on Gabrielle Union being mommy-shamed

Dwyane Wade always has Gabrielle Union‘s back when it comes to internet trolls.

“I try to tell my wife, don’t look at that stuff,” he said of hurtful comments the couple has received after welcoming their baby via surrogate.

Referring to the Instagram photos that the couple posted when their baby Kaavia James was born, the NBA star recalled, “I think for me the most hurtful thing was once we had our baby everyone started [asking] ‘Why is she in the bed holding the baby? Why does she have a gown on and why she acting like she just had the baby?’ Once again people are uneducated on the process and why we decided to go skin to skin as soon as the baby came out.”

Speaking in an interview with Oprah Winfrey for a special titled, “Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade and Their New Baby,” airing this weekend on OWN, the couple spoke about struggling with fertility, their decision to use a surrogate, and Wade taking paternity leave from the NBA.

Since welcoming their new addition in November, Union has regularly posted pictures of the baby which have been met with adoring comments until the actress posted a video of her kissing Kaavia on the mouth.

“Kaav is healthy and I don’t even touch her without washing and sanitizing myself and everything and everyone that comes in contact with her,” Union wrote in the comments of the video, mentioning that all of Winfrey’s crew filming the OWN special was vaccinated for whooping cough before entering their home.

“If you think I waited this long and went thru all this to put my baby in harm’s way … you got another thing coming,” she quipped.

“Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade and Their New Baby” airs on Saturday at 8 p.m.
