Doctors advise Michelle Williams to quit Broadway show

Michelle Williams’ stint on Broadway’s “Once On This Island” has been cut short.

“Effective immediately, Michelle T. Williams has been advised by doctors to take a leave of absence from performing,” read a statement from the show, according to People.

No further explanation was given.

The former Destiny’s Child singer, 38, had only been in the role of goddess Erzulie for two weeks.

Per Playbill, her understudy Cassondra James will take over until December 26. Beginning the next day, the actress who starred in the original production, Lea Salonga, will take over until the final show on January 6, 2019.

It’s been a rocky year for Williams. She fought depression throughout the year and spent several days in a mental health facility. Her relationship with Chad Johnson also appeared to suffer as the couple, who had their own reality show about their love, called it quits in early December.

This summer, Williams made a public commitment to mental health awareness. Of her own journey she explained, “You have to do the work even when you’re tired and feel the heaviness. Take one step at a time! Don’t overwhelm yourself.”
