Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh have a message for everyone: Leave Pete Davidson alone.
The Golden Globes 2019 hosts opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming show and Samberg dished on his time on “Saturday Night Live” and how the growth of social media has changed the show and the writers behind it.
“I think they’re doing a great job and still cranking out really funny stuff. Social media wasn’t as big of a thing when I was on the show — I remember Twitter started while we were there because Ashton Kutcher was hosting … We did a sketch that ended up getting cut, but it was about Twitter ’cause that was the new thing, Twitter, that Ashton Kutcher is known for,” Samberg explained. “And now it’s such a given that everyone is on it all the time.”
Samberg continued, “Pete [Davidson] is hilarious, and the times I’ve interacted with him, he is such a sweet guy. But he’s going through some personal stuff, and there’s no way to live privately now. It’s got to make it harder.”
“Killing Eve” star Oh added, “We should just all leave him alone. I’m serious. Let’s give people space, let’s give people privacy, let’s give them the ability to fail.”
Davidson joined “SNL” in 2014 as one of the youngest cast members ever. In December, he released a statement on Instagram that had fans worried he was suicidal after facing severe cyberbullying in the aftermath of his public split from Ariana Grande.
“I really don’t want to be on this earth anymore,” he wrote. “I’m doing my best to stay here for you but i actually don’t know how much longer i can last.”
Page Six then learned that “SNL” chief Lorne Michaels was sending Davidson to get help before he returned to the show in the new year.
