How Kelly Rowland used her short hair to stand out from Beyoncé

When you’re performing alongside Beyoncé, you have to find your own way to shine.

For Kelly Rowland, that meant wearing her hair in a short pixie cut during her Destiny’s Child days. “I felt like I was, amongst four girls, people knew that it was me,” the singer, 37, told PopSugar. “It was this statement of individuality.”

While Destiny’s Child was known for dressing in coordinated outfits designed by mother Tina Knowles, Rowland’s original four bandmates  — Beyoncé, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett — all wore their hair long, as did Michelle Williams, who joined the group in 2000 following Roberson and Luckett’s departures.

More than a decade after going solo, Rowland is now partial to long, curly hair or protective styles like braids and cornrows. She also just released a song, “Crown,” in partnership with Dove that celebrates all different hairstyles. But she isn’t opposed to chopping her hair off again one day.

“I’m going to do that when I’m 50. Cut it all off,” she said. “It just looks so free.”
