Michelle Obama steals the spotlight at 2019 Grammys

Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance Sunday at the 2019 Grammys, shocking an elated crowd — who cheered so loudly, she had to re-start her speech.

Obama, wearing a sequined Sachin & Babi pantsuit, appeared during the awards show’s opening, alongside host Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jennifer Lopez, who all spoke about the impact music has had on their lives.

After several moments of clapping and shrieking from the starry audience, the former first lady finally calmed the crowd by saying, with a laugh, “We have a show to do.”

She then spoke about the power of music: “From the Motown records I wore out on the South Side to the ‘Who Run the World?’ song that fueled me through this last decade, music has always helped me tell my story. Whether we like country or rap or rock, music helps us share ourselves, our dignity and sorrows, our hopes and joys. It allows us to hear one another, to invite each other in. Music shows us that all of it matters, every story within every voice, every note within every song. Is that right, ladies?”

Following her appearance, Obama tweeted that she wanted to stand beside Keys on her big night as Grammys host.

“A big part of friendship is showing up for your girls—that’s why I was thrilled to be there for the one and only @aliciakeys at the #GRAMMYs,” Obama said. “She is one of the most genuine and thoughtful people I know—there’s no one better to help us all celebrate the unifying power of music!”

Obama, 55, has been on tour promoting her book “Becoming.”
