On the same weekend Melissa McCarthy won a Razzie for worst actress, she could win an Oscar for best actress.
The Razzies have been given out by the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation for the last 39 years, and McCarthy is in good company. Eleven other actors have been nominated as the best and worst at the same time, including Jack Nicholson in 1993, Alec Baldwin in 2004, Sandra Bullock in 2010 and Eddie Redmayne in 2016, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Only two have ever been nominated as best/worst for the same role: James Coco lost both his Razzie and Oscar nominations for his scenes in “Only When I Laugh” in 1982, as did Amy Irving for “Yentl” in 1984.
McCarthy earned her Razzie for terrible performances as Connie Edwards in “The Happytime Murders,” an adult puppet murder comedy, and Deanna in “Life of the Party,” about a newly divorced mom who goes back to college. Her Oscar nomination is for her leading role in “Can You Ever Forgive Me,” based on Lee Israel’s life as a celebrity forger.
McCarthy also took home a Razzie for this acting job, though it was in the “redemption” category, which bodes well for the Academy Awards on Sunday night.
Razzie winners, if you can call them that, receive golden raspberry statues for their lack of achievement.
Will Ferrell and John. C Reilly’s “Holmes & Watson” took home the fruit for worst picture and three other categories.
McCarthy beat out Jennifer Garner in “Peppermint,” Amber Heard in “London Fields,” Helen Mirren in “Winchester” and Amanda Seyfried in “The Clapper,” according to reports.
McCarthy received her first Oscar nod as best supporting actress in 2012 for her hysterical performance in the comedy “Bridesmaids.” She lost to Octavia Spencer for “The Help.”
