Stars, snubs and snafus: Everything to know about Madonna’s Oscars bash

After the Oscars, there are the parties: the Governors Ball, where winners grab dinner while their trophies are engraved; the ones hosted by movie studios and Netflix; the Vanity Fair bash (which, The New York Times reported this week, has lost its lustre); and the cool-kids-only affair hosted for a second year by Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

But those looking for old-school debauchery head to the Coldwater Canyon home of Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary, for an afterparty now in its 12th year.

“You look around, and you’re blinded by fame. It’s the people who aren’t famous who stick out,” said one attendee. “Everyone dances, everyone gets loaded. It’s the one party Leo [DiCaprio] says he actually looks forward to every year.”

Stars who have made the guest list — which is planned and approved by co-host Madonna herself — include Oprah, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Julia Roberts (who wore Converse sneakers to be more comfortable on the dance floor), Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen, Jack Nicholson, Diane von Furstenberg, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Lady Gaga. While DiCaprio regularly brings his mom as his red-carpet Oscars date, Page Six reported that he switched over to then-girlfriend Toni Garrn for the 2014 party. That same year, Madonna’s ex Sean Penn was spotted making out with new girlfriend Charlize Theron on the dance floor.

Photos are not allowed, and there is a full-on gag order for all guests, party planners, caterers, set builders, etc. Madonna is known to stay on the dance floor for hours (sometimes on her own, sometimes with her kids Lourdes and Rocco). Paul McCartney has jammed with members of the Rolling Stones, and last year Cardi B performed. Penélope Cruz once showed up sporting a mustache, while her husband Javier Bardem wore a feather boa. And the drunkenness is legendary.

British actor Sam Claflin — now said to be in the running to be the next James Bond — told Elle he spilled a glass of wine on Derek Hough and puked on Oseary’s porch.

Jennifer Lawrence has admitted she did the same on his porch in 2013, the year she won for “Silver Linings Playbook.” The next year, Eddie Redmayne continued the tradition after he won for “The Theory of Everything.”

Someone who was there recalled to The Post, “He was dancing in a circle around his Oscar” while Mark Ronson DJ’ed.

“They’ve learned how to deal with it,” revealed one guest who found himself puking as well. “They give you stuff to sober up, and clean it all up very fast.”

Added a second guest, “The night owls love that it doesn’t get going till 2:30 a.m. And by the time you’re really wasted, there’s a major carb breakfast.” In 2017, there were Egg McMuffins from McDonald’s. “I didn’t see Madonna digging in, though,” the second guest said.

It all started when the writer’s strike of 2008 caused the cancellation of the then-top draw Vanity Fair party. Madonna, Oseary and Demi Moore decided to fill the gap with a late, late super-private party.

Gucci has provided swag bags since the first year. In 2012, the label even flew in a Florentine artisan to hand-emboss initials onto signature pieces of Gucci luggage.

Madonna’s always been the one to choose the theme: One year it was Cuban; last year, it was women and power. This year, sources say, the theme is Morocco.

“They take the themes to the nth degree: the staff outfits, the valets, the décor,” said an insider. “No expense is spared.”

In 2010, the official theme was India — but behind the scenes, it was war. Guest DJ Diddy stopped the music and refused to turn it back on until Anderson Cooper started dancing. The CNN anchor immediately complied, but “I don’t think Madonna was too happy with Diddy that night,” said someone who was there. “They got into it. There’s only one grand diva at this party.”

Moore stopped showing up in 2013, the year she split with Ashton Kutcher (who has partnered with Oseary on a number of investments). The legend in Hollywood is that Madonna ghosted Moore that year and invited Kutcher instead. But a source familiar with the situation said that it was Moore who opted to bow out: “Demi was just heartbroken, she’d gone into a tailspin, and [there was] no way she could show her face.”

Some who aren’t invited do successfully sneak in. Jenny McCarthy told Entertainment Weekly that she and her sister managed to talk their way into the party in 2015, but got busted when her sister fell down a flight of stairs. (McCarthy also said they’d had copious amounts of Champagne.) Before he was famous, singer Ed Sheeran went with Rita Ora by pretending to be DJ Calvin Harris (Ora’s then-boyfriend). And power publicist Peggy Siegal wrote in her annual Oscars diary, published at Huffington Post, that she gained entrance by lying on the floor of actress Alicia Vikander’s SUV.

“Once inside, I was terrified of being spotted by Guy Oseary, who ejected me two years earlier for the sin of being a publicist,” she wrote.

In 2017, young actor Lucas Hedges — then a Supporting Actor nominee for “Manchester By the Sea” — almost got thrown out by committing the ultimate no-no and snapping a photo. As he told W, “I’ve never been so scared in my entire life.”

Up until last year, there were no Kardashians. “Madonna didn’t want that element,” says another source. “But last year she felt she couldn’t avoid them anymore.”

Kim made the list, although Adele reportedly skipped the party because she didn’t want to hang out with the reality star.

The saddest shutout, however, goes to actress Lindsay Lohan. Although the “Mean Girls” actress had been a guest in the past, she didn’t make the cut in 2011. Lohan showed up anyway, but security turned her away.

“She was screaming and yelling and cursing and name-dropping, which only made it worse,” said one observer.“

Josh Brolin tried to get her in but the guards weren’t having it. Madonna didn’t want her.”
