Spike Lee wants the Academy to “Do the Right Thing.”
The legendary director, 61, arrived on the 2019 Oscars red carpet wearing a purple Ozwald Boateng suit with gold Jordans which, according to the New York Times, were “made by Tinker Hatfield (and commissioned for Mr. Lee by Michael Jordan himself).”
He paired his ensemble with a custom-made 18-carat gold necklace in the shape of the symbol Prince adopted as his name, which was made by Amedeo Scognamiglio, lined in diamonds and featuring a 17-carat fire opal.
“I told Ozwald to make my pants high-waters so they see the Jordans,” Lee told the Times. “I don’t care what nobody’s wearing. I win the Oscar on the red carpet. Men, women, I don’t care if they’re wearing 15-inch heels. They can’t be messing with the Jordans I’m going to be wearing. I’m going to be as clean as the board of health. I’m going to be sharp as a razor.”
The zero-time Oscar winner — whose film “BlacKKKlansman” is nominated for three awards tonight, including Best Picture and Best Director — finished off his look with the same pair of gold “Love” and “Hate” knuckle rings worn by the character Radio Raheem in his 1989 film “Do the Right Thing.”
A testament to his legacy as a filmmaker as well as a blunt message to the Academy about his long-overdue Oscar.
