What’s going on with Tommy Hilfiger’s loafers at the 2019 Oscars?

When it comes to being the best-dressed man on the red carpet, Tommy Hilfiger knows how to smoke the competition.

The fashion designer, 67, hit the red carpet at the 2019 Oscars wearing a blazer of his own design that included multiple different colors and styles of plaid. But it was his footwear that made the biggest statement: Hilfiger chose a pair of velvet smoking loafers with familiar-looking leaves embroidered on the front.

But while they might resemble marijuana, the designer’s shoes are actually a $525 style by Stubbs & Wootton for Boast featuring Japanese maple leaves, which are strikingly similar in shape.

The leaf logo is Boast’s signature, and “celebrates the convergence of sports and culture.”

In the aftermath of California’s legalization of recreational marijuana, cannabis has become something of a running theme at the Oscars. Nominees at this year’s show, for instance, will receive gift bags filled with CBD oil, cannabis-infused edibles and beauty products and even an annual VIP membership to a cannabis-friendly LA social club.

Hilfiger was joined by his wife Dee Ocleppo, who wore a silver gown and accessorized with a $5,695 bejeweled Judith Leiber bag in the shape of a cell phone.
