Ava DuVernay: Gayle King is finally being recognized for her work

Gayle King has stepped out of the shadow of best friend Oprah Winfrey thanks to her recent news-making interviews, filmmaker Ava DuVernay states in the new Time 100 issue.

Despite King’s long career, “We’ve regarded her in the context of others,” Oscar-nominated DuVernay said in Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World edition.

But after the “CBS This Morning” host King’s astonishing interview with R. Kelly, DuVernay concluded, “We’ve finally decided to . . . see her for the truth seeker that she has always been. Our eyes are now open as we bear witness to her, standing right in front of us, gracefully in the center.”

The issue, out Friday, also includes Gal Gadot on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Beyoncé on Michelle Obama and Tim Tebow on Chip and Joanna Gaines.

The Time 100 Gala will feature performances by Taylor Swift and Khalid.
