Tolkien estate does ‘not endorse’ upcoming biopic

JRR Tolkien’s estate wants to be clear it has no involvement in the upcoming Nicholas Hoult biopic, “Tolkien,” due out next month.

“The family and the Estate wish to make clear that they did not approve of, authorize or participate in the making of this film,” the estate said in a statement on Tuesday. “They do not endorse it or its content in any way.”

While the family is aware of the film, a spokesperson tells Page Six they haven’t seen it and their statement is not a comment on the quality of the movie.

“The family and the estate are very private,” we’re told. “Their concern is that the fans think the family endorsed the film. They just wanted to set the record straight.”

“We are so proud of Dome Karukoski’s film ‘Tolkien’ which focuses on the early years of JRR Tolkien’s extraordinary life and does not depict subject matter from his novels,” Fox Searchlight told Page Six in a statement. “While we did not work with the Tolkien Estate on this project, the filmmaking team has the utmost respect and admiration for Mr. Tolkien and his phenomenal contribution to literature.”

The upcoming film stars Hoult as the “Lord of The Rings” author and Lily Collins as his wife Edith Bratt. The biopic, which comes out May 10, focuses on the years of his life that led to his invention of Middle Earth.
