Norah O’Donnell finally has the job that she’s been chasing for years — but she’s not getting paid megabucks to do it.
As Page Six previously reported, O’Donnell — who was named Monday as the next anchor of “CBS Evening News” — has been lobbying to get the gig since before her predecessor, Jeff Glor, was hired in October 2017.
But while her colleague Gayle King just negotiated an $11 million-a-year salary to stay at “CBS This Morning,” we’re told that O’Donnell is getting between $7 million and $8 million for the “Evening News” job.
O’Donnell was previously making about $5 million on “CBS This Morning,” while we’re told Glor was pulling in less than $3 million.
However, O’Donnell’s deal comes with a lot of other perks.
As Page Six first reported, CBS is moving the broadcast to Washington, DC, because O’Donnell’s family is based there, and — as Page Six also first reported — CBS just gave her a promotion at “60 Minutes,” where she now has her own dedicated team of producers.
O’Donnell’s also been given the title of managing editor of the “CBS Evening News,” a rank Glor wasn’t given, but which his predecessor, Scott Pelley, did have.
Despite plunging ratings — and an array of sources telling us that Glor has been on borrowed time — CBS executives had long insisted that Glor’s job was safe.
We first reported in May 2018 that execs were “panicking” about Glor’s numbers and that insiders were already convinced his days were numbered.
A senior executive — who no longer works for the company — even called to complain that it was outrageous to report that Glor was on the chopping block. But Glor is to be replaced less than 18 months after he started.
Reps for CBS News declined to comment.
King will be joined by Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil as co-hosts of “CBS This Morning.”
