Demi Lovato’s new tattoo sends a powerful message

Demi Lovato is putting herself first.

The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer, 26, added to her vast tattoo collection with some small but meaningful new ink: the word “me” on her left ring finger.

“Me first 🖤 thank you @winterstone for my new forever reminder.. #i🖤me,” she captioned a pic of her new art by celebrity tattoo artist Winter Stone.

Lovato further explained the significance of the design and its placement on her Instagram Stories. “You can’t love anyone unless you love yourself first,” she wrote.

Demi is currently single, having reportedly broken up with fashion designer Henry Levy earlier this year. She started dating the fashion designer shortly after leaving rehab, and he was reportedly “helping Demi stay on the right path” post-hospitalization after her near-fatal drug overdose in 2018.

The new tattoo could also be a reference to Lovato’s song “Tell Me You Love Me,” which includes lyrics like, “I don’t know what I’m living for / If I’m living without you” and “I don’t know who I am without you.” When she first released the track, Demi told Billboard it resonated with following her split from longtime boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama.

“It’s about the vulnerability of coming out of a very serious relationship and having a tough time with it,” she said. “It also at the same time calls out a big misconception with the line, ‘You ain’t nobody ’til you got somebody,’ which again comes from that vulnerability with mixed emotions.”

Valderrama has heavily supported Lovato over the past year; he frequently visited her in the hospital after her overdose, and was also spotted with her when she was in rehab.

Since leaving rehab in November, Lovato has been living her best life — vacationing with her friends, spending time with family, resuming her MMA training and, clearly, prioritizing herself.
