Shawn Mendes gets butterfly tattoo after fan edit goes viral

Shawn Mendes just added another tattoo to his collection, inspired by one of his fans.

Last Wednesday, Twitter user Kayla posted a photo edit of the 20-year-old singer with a tattoo of a butterfly blooming into flowers on his left bicep. “Shawn Mendes with a butterfly tattoo. I rest my case,” she wrote.

After the image — inspired by the work of Chilean tattoo artist Christ TATTXX, aka @macdreaper — went viral, Mendes reached out to the fan directly.

“Wait this is awesome, can u DM the drawing ??” he tweeted. In a series of direct messages Kayla shared on her timeline, Mendes asked for a scan of the photo and seemed impressed with her editing skills.

“I found the design on Pinterest and thought it’d be a super cool tattoo on him!” Kayla told Page Six Style. “I posted the edit on Twitter and somehow he saw it, I don’t know how but he did. When he DM’d me I was literally at the car wash … it was pretty insane.”

On Monday, Mendes and Dallas tattoo artist Livia Tsang both shared Instagram images of the resulting (very real) tattoo. “For the best @shawnmendes,” Tsang captioned her post. “Based on an edit from a fan, original art by @macdreaper.”

Wonder if Mendes will take requests from fans going forward.
