Ewan McGregor’s daughter Clara opens up about abortion, substance abuse

Ewan McGregor‘s daughter Clara opened up on Instagram about her long battle with anxiety, substance abuse and recovering from an abortion.

Clara, who has been vocal about her disapproval in her father’s choice to leave her mom for “Fargo” co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, chose to be honest about her struggles in the hopes of helping others who might feel similarly.

“Iv [sic] been so ashamed of some of my mental health issues that I haven’t even wanted to tell friends. Iv suffered from crippling anxiety since i was 4 years and gone through my fair share of depression,” she wrote in a Notes app message. “Iv gone to therapy since I was a kid and I am so grateful for what therapy and psychoanalysis has done for me. Iv worked on myself and continued to do so.”

Clara, 23, described her anxiety as a “cage I was stuck in and still struggle to get out of” but credited prescription medication Lexapro for helping her out of a dark place. She also said her anxiety led her to abuse Xanax but has been clean for 110 days.

“I went to [Utah rehab] Cirque Lodge for a little while to get myself on track and met the most wonderful people who changed my life,” she continued. “I was so ashamed of my addiction, of my anxiety and depression. I was ashamed of the abuse I had let happen to me.”

Clara also said she blamed herself for “the bruises, the black eyes the rapes and for the attacks a man did to me.”

“I’m regaining this power now,” she added. “Iv had a hard year Iv been figuring out who I am but I feel so loved and blessed with where I am now.”

Alongside her typed-out message, Clara asked for her followers to “go easy” on her following a tough reveal and added that she had an abortion.

“This past year I dealt with addiction, I got sober, and I dealt with a great deal of depression and anxiety I had an abusive relationship, I had an abortion the list goes only [sic], she wrote.

“I didn’t know there was a way to get better. But there is. Help yourself so others can help you too. And never be ashamed to talk about it.”
