Sylvia Miles remembered at the Walter Reade Theater

Actress and nightlife fixture Sylvia Miles was remembered at the Walter Reade Theater Thursday.

Miles’ pal Pat Hackett spoke of Miles’ and Andy Warhol’s famous line about them attending the opening of an envelope. But sometimes someone would push the envelope of the envelope joke too far, she said.

“I was next to Sylvia at a party once when [a] guy did that, and Sylvia whispered to me, ‘Funny, but every place I go, he’s already here. He’d go to the opening of a nasal passage.’” Then she quickly said, “‘But don’t repeat that line to anyone or they’ll use it against me. I’ll stick with envelope. It’s more attractive.’”

Michael Musto emceed. Miles died in June at 94.
