Rob Lowe says Steven Tyler played ‘big part’ in his sobriety

Rob Lowe credits Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler for helping him stay sober.

The 55-year-old actor revealed at a Television Critics Association panel on Tuesday that, early into Lowe’s sobriety journey 30 years ago, Tyler, 71, offered a few words of encouragement — even though they had never met in person.

“I was probably sober two or three weeks, maybe, and I got a phone call from Steven Tyler, who I did not know,” Lowe said, according to People. “He called me and said, ‘I heard you’re in recovery and I just wanted to say, ‘Hey, you’re going to do great.'”

Lowe said the rocker’s call helped changed his perspective and he thought, “If it’s good enough for Steven Tyler, it’s good enough for me.”

He added, “He’s a big part of who I am today.”

In 2014, Lowe shared that he got sober in order to stop cheating on his wife, Sheryl Berkoff.

“[I] was attempting my first try at monogamy, which was not really in my nature at the time, and I wasn’t able to do it,” he told Haute Living LA. “It made me examine how I was living.”

Tyler has struggled with his own sobriety over the years, despite serving as a motivator for Lowe.

In 2019, he told GQ, “I’m going on my fourth run. So I’ve got nine years in December. Which I’m very proud of.”
