Meghan Markle makes surprise ‘America’s Got Talent’ appearance

Meghan Markle has invaded primetime.

On Wednesday, the Duchess of Sussex, 39, made a surprise virtual appearance during the Season 15 finale of “America’s Got Talent,” showing her support for finalist Archie Williams, who spent many years behind bars for a crime he did not commit.

“Hi Archie, I just wanted to let you know that we’ve been so moved by your story, and we have been cheering you on every week, and it’s not just because we’re partial to the name,” Meghan said in her video, cheekily referencing her 1-year-old son Archie, whom she shares with husband Prince Harry.

“A very special message to you, that I’ll probably be saying all of my life, but on this night it is specifically for you, Archie, we are proud of you, and we are rooting for you, and we can’t wait to see what you do. We’re in your corner. Have a good night,” she continued.

Williams, a 59-year-old singer from Louisiana, had been incarcerated for 37 years for a crime he did not commit. Williams said he turned to music during “dark times.” The Innocence Project took on Williams’ case, and in March 2019, he was released from prison.

“I watched ‘America’s Got Talent’ in prison, and I would visualize myself being there,” Williams said during his time on the show. “Always desired to be on a stage like this, and now I’m here.”

Williams performed “Blackbird” by the Beatles on Tuesday night. Brandon Leake was ultimately named the “America’s Got Talent” winner for Season 15.

Wednesday’s appearance from Meghan marked her second TV cameo this week. On Monday, she and Harry, 36, spoke on ABC’s “Time 100” special.
