‘Frankie the Doorman’ is retiring

Frankie Smith (aka “Frankie the Doorman”), who has worked at 88 Central Park West for 26 years, is retiring from the celebrity-heavy building that’s had residents including Sting, Paul Simon and Robert De Niro.

Lorne Michaels even once hooked Smith up with the NBC show’s ultimate VIP status.

“He gave me 25 years of ‘Saturday Night Live’ after-parties,” Smith told the West Side Rag. “After my shift, I’d go up there, or I’d take the day off, go to the show, and then to the after-party.”

De Niro also once cast Smith as a cabbie in the movie “The Comedian,” but Smith recalled, “When it was time to shoot the scene, it turned out I couldn’t drive, so they had someone else do it.”
