Lenny Kravitz’s first words to Lisa Bonet: ‘I like your hair’

Lenny Kravitz was engaged when he first met Lisa Bonet.

The “Fly Away” rocker, 56, details his romantic courtship with “The Cosby Show” alum in his newly released memoir, “Let Love Rule.”

Kravitz announced his engagement to Ming See Lau, nicknamed Mitzi — daughter of a wealthy Hong Kong businessman — at his 21st birthday party.

But his feelings for Bonet, 52, predated his engagement. Before they’d even met he’d seen her picture on the cover of a TV Guide and told a friend, “I’m gonna marry that girl.”

When they finally did meet backstage after a New Edition concert, Kravitz’s first words to his “boyish fantasy” were, “I like your hair.”

“It was a lame line, a stupid line, one of the worst lines in the history of bad lines,” he writes.

Nevertheless, the two became close friends and even though nothing had happened yet Kravitz says his fiancée “saw my obsession with Lisa … She knew that there wasn’t room in my life for both her and Lisa,” and so they called off the wedding.

Finally one evening they were in a recording studio alone and Bonet asked where the bathroom was. As Kravitz was showing her, she tripped over a cord and fell into his arms.

“In a moment, everything changed,” he recalls. “We started kissing … That night I moved into Lisa’s bedroom. Destiny had led us here. With every passing hour, our love blossomed. Premonition turned to prophecy. Prophecy turned to ecstasy.”

The Grammy winner is equally as flowery when describing their daughter Zoë’s conception on a secluded beach in the Bahamas.

“We didn’t need a thing. We didn’t need clothes. We bathed in the ocean. We made love.”

The couple eloped in Las Vegas on Bonet’s 20th birthday in 1987 and divorced in 1993.
