BTS talks masculinity on the cover of Esquire’s Winter issue
BTS is taking the world by storm — and challenging traditional masculinity along the way.
The K-pop sensation appeared on the cover of Esquire’s Winter 2020-2021 issue, with band members dishing on everything from their new album “Be” and unexpected fame, to their takes on masculinity and mental health.
“There is this culture where masculinity is defined by certain emotions, characteristics. I’m not fond of these expressions. What does being masculine mean?” said Suga, 27.
“People’s conditions vary day by day. Sometimes you’re in a good condition; sometimes you aren’t. Based on that, you get an idea of your physical health. And that same thing applies mentally. Some days you’re in a good state; sometimes you’re not,” he continued. “Many pretend to be okay, saying that they’re not ‘weak,’ as if that would make you a weak person. I don’t think that’s right.”
“People won’t say you’re a weak person if your physical condition is not that good. It should be the same for the mental condition as well. Society should be more understanding,” Suga said.

The group is known to experiment with fashion, and Jung Kook thrilled fans when he performed in man buns on “The Tonight Show” in September.
On Sunday, the band performed hit singles “Life Goes on” and “Dynamite” in an empty Seoul Stadium for the AMAs 2020 show and nabbed two awards: Favorite Duo or Group Pop/Rock and Favorite Social Artist.
