Laura Dern: ‘There’s more shame in talking about money than sex’

“There’s more shame talking about money than there is about sex,” Laura Dern claims.

Dern — whose “Big Little Lies” character Renata Klein once seethed, “I will not not be rich” — adds, “I can’t believe nobody ever mentioned money to me, ever. Nobody talked about it. Should you get a checking account? How do you save? Who do you talk to about it?”

The 54-year-old Dern also loves that Renata’s line has become one of the show’s most-memed moments.

“I hope every woman claims that,” she said during a Vanity Fair Cocktail Hour, Live! chat with Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Radhika Jones.

“I had no idea that it would resonate in the way it does and if it was any line that I’ve ever said that could resonate, I’m thrilled that it’s that, because it’s obviously multi-layered and it’s not only about finance. But how wonderful that women are talking about money.”

The Oscar winner, who started acting as a teen, also jokingly apologized for appearing in her daughter Jaya’s TikTok videos, explaining that her 16-year-old would “have killed me if I wouldn’t have given her at least a few TikToks. She asks me most days to do a TikTok so I’m trying to pace myself.”

And the “Wild” actress called filming “Jurassic World: Dominion” during the COVID-19 pandemic “a very complicated and daunting consideration — to go back to work at such a crucial and scary moment and have no ability to wear PPE in the workplace as actors.”

The Vanity Fair Cocktail Hour, Live! is a virtual charity event in support of the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s COVID-19 relief efforts.
