Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist reacts to her covered-up Met Gala look

Call it undercover glam.

While Kim Kardashian kept her face totally obscured throughout the 2021 Met Gala, her makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, confirmed that she looked beautiful beneath her headline-making Balenciaga ensemble.

“Behind the mask,” he wrote on Instagram Tuesday, sharing a photo of the makeup look he created — complete with contouring and a smoky eye — for the star’s viral gala appearance.

He also gave a glimpse at the prep involved, snapping a photo of products from La Mer, his Makeup by Mario brand and (what else?) KKW Beauty.

While many fans were confused by Kardashian’s hidden makeup, Dedivanovic took the comments in stride, even reposting a series of memes Wednesday and joking, “It’s the makeup for me, LOL.”

“Mario can do no wrong,” one Twitter user joked alongside a photo of the mask, while another meme read, “If you’re feeling useless today remember someone had to do Kim’s makeup for the Met Gala.”

Even Kardashian commented, “You killed it boo! best look ever!!!” on the post, while her hairstylist Chris Appleton — who was behind the star’s 75-inch hair extensions — wrote, “Lmao.”

The Skims founder didn’t keep Dedivanovic’s handiwork hidden all night, though, as she traded her face covering for large, superhero-like sunglasses at the Balenciaga Cathédrale afterparty

Kanye West gave his estranged wife’s look his stamp of approval by posting photos of the ensemble on Wednesday. The rapper is a longtime supporter of Balenciaga’s creative director Demna Gvasalia, who made his Met Gala debut alongside Kardashian on Sunday.

Kardashian herself has spoken out about the meaning – and meme-ing – of her polarizing look, explaining that it fit the gala’s America theme because, “What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!”

She also shared a photo of herself with sister Kendall Jenner on the red carpet, writing, “Kendall was calling my name and I couldn’t see who it was but I saw the outline of her sparkly dress.”

Perhaps thanks to her explanations of the look, fans will feel a little less in the dark themselves.
