Christina Applegate makes first awards show appearance since MS diagnosis

Christina Applegate made her first awards show appearance since announcing her multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

The “Dead to Me” star skipped the red carpet at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night but was photographed in the audience at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

Dressed in a chic black suit and holding on to a cane, Applegate, 51, brought along her daughter, Sadie, 11, as her plus-one. She was also seen sharing a hug with fellow nominee Julia Roberts.

Applegate revealed on Twitter in August 2021 that she had been diagnosed with the chronic disease that attacks the central nervous system.

“Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS. It’s been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition,” she wrote at the time.

“It’s been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some a–hole blocks it.”

A few months later, the “Married… with Children” alum opened up about her health struggles while celebrating a milestone birthday.

“Yup. I turned 50 today. And I have MS,” she tweeted in November 2021. “It’s been a hard one. Sending so much love to all of you this day.

“Many are hurting today, and I am thinking of you. May we find that strength to lift our heads up. Mine currently is on my pillow. But I try.”

Applegate was nominated on Sunday for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Jen Harding in “Dead to Me,” but she lost to Jean Smart from “Hacks.”

While promoting her Netflix series’ third and final season, Applegate shared in November 2022 that she had gained 40 pounds because of her debilitating condition.

And just week, she shared her trepidation over attending the Critics Choice Awards.

“So this Sunday will be the first awards show I have been to since 2019. And the first since MS. NERVOUS! But grateful to the @CriticsChoice for including me,” she tweeted.

The “Anchorman” star has battled health issues before.

She beat breast cancer in 2008 after undergoing a double mastectomy and had her ovaries and Fallopian tubes removed in 2017 in an effort to avoid ovarian cancer.
