‘American Idol’ fans divided over Katy Perry taking break amid drama

Fans are divided over Katy Perry temporarily departing “American Idol” as she faces backlash over her harsh criticisms about contestants.

While the “Teenage Dream” singer heads across the pond with Lionel Richie to attend and perform at King Charles III’s coronation concert Sunday, Ed Sheeran and Alanis Morissette will fill in as co-judges.

Amid Perry’s absence, some fans have taken to social media to agree with the timely break.

“bottom line …katy made a statement that was rude and uncalled for. It had nothing to do with singing,” one fan commented on Page Six’s Instagram post Tuesday, vaguely referencing one of the Grammy nominee’s many headline-making Season 21 remarks.

“Simon [Cowell] only told them how bad they were. Not on there [sic] personal life,” they added.

“Temporarily? So people just forget what a jack ass she is?” another wrote. “Tiger doesn’t change its stripes.”

“I was shocked she said that,” a third fan added of Perry’s unintentional mom-shaming of a now-former contestant. “Sometimes we forget to filter.”

Others, however, defended the “I Kissed a Girl” songstress by comparing her to the infamously cruel Cowell, who was an original judge on the show.

“Get there hell out of here….. Simon Cowell was WAYYYYYYYY worse and he never got replaced! People being offended….. ohhhhhhh no 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄,” a follower commented.

“Katy Perry is the best! This is the best trio ever, and they cannot get rid of any of them. They’re very positive,” another fan wrote of Perry, Richie and Luke Bryan.

“Nothing but trolls coming out of the wood work. Katy perry is very sweet…she is just giving constructive criticism and people now a days cannot and do not get it!” a third fan commented on Page Six’s Facebook page.

“If you Sneeze someone will be offended..,!” the Facebook user continued.

Perry, 38, has not addressed the backlash — but she will likely talk about her experience in England when she returns to the judges’ table.

She initially came under fire for joking that contestant Sara Beth Liebe had been “laying on the table too much” upon hearing the young singer already had three kids.

“It was embarrassing to have that on TV, and it was hurtful,” Liebe, who ultimately quit “Idol” to care for her children, said in a TikTok video after the episode aired earlier this year.

“I think that women supporting and uplifting other women is so cool and I think that mom-shaming is super lame and I think that it’s hard enough to be a mom and it’s hard enough to be a woman.”

More recently, Perry was booed for criticizing another hopeful’s glittery costume.
