Chanel launches limited-edition No. 5 bottle inspired by Marilyn Monroe

Over a century after its launch, Chanel No. 5 remains one of the most iconic perfumes on the market — with an equally iconic list of famous fans.

But this month, the French beauty brand put a limited-edition spin on the scent with its first-ever collectible bottle: the Chanel No. 5 L’Eau Drop ($188).

Shaped like a drop of perfume, the packaging is inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s unforgettable quote from a 1952 Time cover story: “Once this fellow says ‘Marilyn, what do you wear to bed?’ So I said I only wear Chanel No. 5.”

While Monroe wore the original Chanel No. 5 ($172), the drop bottle contains No. 5 L’Eau, a “fresher, more casual version of No. 5″ — as Chanel’s in-house perfumer Olivier Polge told Vogue — featuring familiar floral notes mixed with lighter citrus top notes.

“Much like No. 5, Marilyn carries something universal and at the same time very intimate,” Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur, Chanel’s head of global creative resources for fragrance and beauty, added to the publication.

Monroe is hardly the only star who’s been linked to the iconic scent over the years, as modern campaigns have featured the likes of Gisele Bündchen, Nicole Kidman, Lily-Rose Depp and Brad Pitt.

The bottle itself has also spawned plenty of superstar style moments, as stars like Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna all own clear purses shaped like the fragrance.

In addition to the new limited-edition scent, the classic Chanel No. 5 Eau de Parfum ($172) now comes in a Hand Cream ($60), Hair Mist ($80) and Eau de Toilette Spray ($145).
