Panthers acquiring WR Diontae Johnson in trade with Steelers

A little over 24 hours after they gave away two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Brian Burns, the Carolina Panthers have made another trade. But this time, it’s not nearly as depressing.

As first reported by ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Panthers are acquiring wide receiver Diontae Johnson from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the deal includes cornerback Donte Jackson and a 2024 pick swap—with Carolina receiving the 240th overall selection and Pittsburgh receiving the 178th selection.

Johnson was taken in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Steelers. The University of Toledo product had a solid rookie campaign, as he reeled in 59 passes for 680 yards and five touchdowns and was named a second-team All-Pro as a punt return specialist.

His role increased in 2020, where he recorded 88 receptions over 144 targets with 923 yards and seven scores. He’d follow that with his best NFL campaign in 2021—notching bests in receptions (107), receiving yards (1,161) and touchdowns (eight) en route to his first Pro Bowl nod.
