CALIFORNIA — California is now home to the most Fortune 500 companies in the country.

Fortune announced this week that the Golden State, with 57 of the nation's largest companies, claimed first place for the first time since 2014. California beat both Texas and New York, which tied for second place with 52 companies each.

California took first place despite the fact that five companies fell off the state's list this year, according to Fortune. That's because nine companies headquartered in the Golden State were added to the list, including Clorox, DoorDash and Workday.

Bay Area companies dominated the list with 44 of the 57 companies based in the region, including the top five Fortune 500 companies based in California.

Gov. Gavin Newsom shared the news and noted that California remains the fifth largest economy in the world for the seventh consecutive year, with a nominal GDP of nearly $3.9 trillion in 2023 and a growth rate of 6.1 percent since the year prior, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.
