California Coronavirus: Latest On Cases, Closures, Orders

Here's a roundup of all the COVID-19 developments in California as of April 5.

CALIFORNIA — People on the frontlines of the fight against the new coronavirus will have access to state-subsidized childcare programs under an executive order signed Saturday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The order allows the California Department of Education and California Department of Social Services to waive requirements to allow childcare and after-school programs to serve essential workers, including healthcare professionals, emergency responders, law enforcement and grocery workers.

Earlier this week, the state, along with federal officials, began recommending that people wear face coverings in public. The California Department of Public Health said the masks could help stop people who are sick but asymptomatic from spreading the new coronavirus.

Face coverings are not a substitute for washing hands often, refraining from touching your face with unwashed hands, avoiding sick people, staying home and keeping six feet of distance from others. People who ignore those recommendations in lieu of wearing face coverings could put themselves at increased risk of contracting the virus, the state said.

And as California wraps up the first two weeks of a statewide 'stay at home' order, new numbers revealed Thursday by the Labor Department indicated more than a million residents have sought help for unemployment benefits in the same time period.

What's more, residents began making plans for long-term distance learning, with Gavin Newsom's recommendation Wednesday that public schools across California should remain closed through the end of the school year to help the state contain the new coronavirus.

There were more than 335,500 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States and 9,562 deaths as of Sunday evening, according to Johns Hopkins University. 339 of those deaths were in California. The U.S. has the most confirmed coronavirus cases in the world.

Meanwhile, more than two weeks after the Bay Area first announced it's own "shelter-in-place" order to help slow the spread of the new coronavirus, health officials believe the proactive move may have helped the region avoid a disastrous surge in COVID-19 patients.

Doctors at hospitals around the Bay Area are treating fewer cases than they expected to see after two weeks — the maximum time it takes for people infected with the virus to start showing symptoms — and many believe the lockdown is responsible for "flattening the curve" of the virus, POLITICO reported.

Still, a surge of some kind remains likely, and maintaining social distancing is critical to avoid the kind of deadly surge seen in New York, experts said. On Tuesday, seven Bay Area counties extend their shelter-in-place orders through May 3, in an effort to wait out the outbreak.

Newsom said Wednesday that more than 34,000 health care workers have signed up to join the fight against the new coronavirus, one day after the state called on medical professionals to help grow its health workforce. Through the program, California Health Corps, the state hopes to enlist a wide range of medical professionals, including retirees and medical students, to treat COVID-19 patients.
