California Coronavirus Latest: Updates On Cases, Orders, Closures

Here's a roundup of all the COVID-19 developments in California as of March 29.

CALIFORNIA — Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an order Friday halting all evictions for renters impacted by the new coronavirus outbreak in California. The moratorium will be in effect through May 31, starting in time to protect renters in advance of their April rent payments.

Landlords are prohibited from evicting tenants who can't pay rent due to coronavirus, but tenants will be obligated to repay rent in a timely manner after the moratorium is lifted, the governor's office said.

More than 30 California legislators signed a letter urging Newsom to issue a statewide eviction moratorium and saying local governments had failed to act quickly enough.

Last week, Newsom called up the National Guard to assist deliveries at the state's food banks. The governor said the executive order will provide short-term food security to isolated and vulnerable Californians and the short deployment will help to stabilize the immediate need of food banks.

Meanwhile, shortages of masks and other safety equipment have prompted donation drives across the state, with one healthcare worker using a Patch Neighbor Post to ask for donations from her community. More than a dozen people jumped in with donations or suggestions.

PG&E stepped-up in a big way, donating 1 million N95 masks and surgical masks stockpiled by the company for utility crews working in construction zones or responding to wildfires. The masks were donated to the governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES). The utility company and its foundation is also contributing $1 million to nonprofits that are helping people facing food shortages.

All Californians are now under a shelter in place order that aims to slow the community spread of coronavirus, or COVID-19, in California. The order was announced Thursday evening by Gov. Newsom.

Individuals and businesses struggling to complete income taxes as most business, including tax preparers and accounting firms, are closed received a reprieve from the U.S. Treasury Department Friday morning when the tax deadline was moved from April 15 to July 15.
