BERKELEY, CA — This adorable photo has a captivating back-story.

C. L. Green of Berkeley is a keen gardener who grows fennel. According to her sister, Laurene Green of Pleasanton, local anise swallowtail butterfly caterpillars love to munch on the fennel. The caterpillars stick around for their metamorphosis into a butterfly.

C. L. even hosts some of them in her house using a small lepidopterarium.

When the butterflies emerge from their chrysalis, she places them on her own or her son’s nose as they dry out and pump up their wings. C. L. considers it a way of welcoming them into the world with a friendly touch.

Late last month, patient Pepper had the honor.
