New Year's Eve Balloon Drop Celebration 2023: Chabot Space & Science Center, Oakland

"Piano: An All-Woman Show" is an immersive, entertaining evening of music and stories featuring women composers for the piano over a 250-year period. According to audiences, the show is “astonishingly beautiful and informative,” combining “warm, wise, and funny curation” with “soulful and formidable artistry.” You’ll get to know Élisabeth Claude Jacquet de La Guerre, a musician in the court of Louis XIV of France; Marianna Martines, a favorite duet partner of Mozart’s; Florence Price, the first African-American woman to gain widespread recognition as a composer; and other composers representing a variety of time periods, from when Bach was two years old to the early 20th century. Like women today, these composers struggled with sexism, with imposter syndrome, with being mothers who were also artists, and with gaining professional recognition. Most of them wondered if they were really amateurs underneath it all. Yet they composed anyway. Prepare to be inspired! An audience favorite and quarter-finalist at the 2016 Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition, Brianna Conrey is known for her elegantly expressive interpretations of familiar standards as well as for “pushing the repertoire envelope,” resulting in “standout performances” (Theater Jones). Critics have praised her “glittering scales,” “sparkling voicing,” and “well-shaped, clarified vision.” Equally at home with words as she is with music, Brianna’s “magical,” “heartwarming” stories balance poignant observation with the “joyfully humorous.” Her writing focuses on modern womanhood, creativity, and family life, and has been featured in P.S. I Love You, Forge, and Human Parts. Student tickets for this event are FREE! Please be ready to present your student ID at the venue when you check in.

On Saturday September 14th the Carquinez Model Railroad Society will be hosting its 9/11 Remembrance Open House. All proceeds from this Open House are donated to the Crockett Carquinez Fire Department. We’ll be open from 10 AM to 4 PM and we’re located at 645 Loring Avenue in Crockett across from C&amp;H Sugar.
The theme of this Open House is Passenger Trains on Parade illustrating the many different trains that people in the US and around the world have used and still use today for their journeys. In addition to Amtrak, also expect to see trains from across the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, and elsewhere. So come to the Carquinez Model Railroad Society’s September 14 Open House and watch us recreate these scenes in HO scale on a world class model railroad! Enjoy the artistry and craftsmanship! And don’t forget to try our Scavenger Hunt!
Our 36' x 60' HO scale model railroad (on three levels!) depicts the Southern Pacific/Union Pacific railroad from Oakland, across the Sierra Nevada mountains, to Sparks, NV. Our railroad allows you to walk alongside the trains as they journey from Oakland, up through Berkeley and Richmond, over to Crockett and Martinez, and across the bridge to Fairfield. From there, it’s a trip up the stairs – the trains use a helix - to Davis, and on to Sacramento and Colfax. From there you wind your way across the Sierras arriving in Sparks, NV. 
The trip is great, the scenery and detail are fantastic, our members are friendly, we’re happy to answer your questions, and you only need to come to Crockett! Make a day of it and check out Crockett and enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants. We’re looking forward to seeing you! And don’t forget to check out our Gift Shop!
Model railroading is a great hobby! Think of it as a social multi-player role playing kinetic art form. We welcome new members and offer Youth, Senior, and Family memberships. Ask a member for more information. Membership has its rewards!

Back by popular demand: Come make art with The Compound Gallery and with your community during “Printing In The Park,” our second annual free, fun event for the whole family on Sunday, September 15 from 12-4 p.m.

If you ever wanted to try your hand at letterpress printmaking, and want to enjoy a Sunday afternoon in beautiful Doyle Hollis Park with your neighbors, this event is perfect for you! We will have Bay Area artists on hand to help you put your imagination into ink, and Artist David Fullarton will be printing up some giveaway prints! Did we mention this is all free? 

You want more? Okay: While you’re having fun and creating new art, The Compound Gallery will be throwing a FREE raffle, and you can pick up your ticket at the printing station. The friendly folks at The Compound Gallery will be stocked with fabulous prints waiting for you to grab them.
