CONCORD, CA — The Concord Police Department welcomed two new officers with a swearing-in ceremony Monday.

Officers Andrew Mathers and Justin Caballero "will go through a few weeks of in-house training, then hit the ground running by the end of this month," the department said.

After obtaining a bachelor's degree in business from California State University, East Bay, Mathers recently graduated from the 194th Academy Class at the Contra Costa Law Enforcement Training Center, receiving the academy’s "Top Gun" award in firearms, according to the department.

Prior to his police career, Mathers contemplated becoming a professional jazz trumpet player, but instead followed in his father’s footsteps to become a police officer, the agency said.
