The Best Meteor Showers of 2015

Some of the best stars in Hollywood are those shining above. Here's a rundown of when shooting stars will be prominent this year.

It’s always a treat to see a meteor streaking through the sky. Also known as shooting stars, they’re visible any time of the year but chances are greater that you’ll see them during meteor showers. Here are the dates to turn your gaze skyward:

Orionids: Oct. 4 – Nov. 14, Maximum Oct. 21-22

This meteor shower typically produces 20-25 meteors per hour.

Northern Taurids: Oct. 19 – Dec. 10, Maximum Nov. 11 - 12

Since this meteor shower overlaps with the Orionids, the skies are sometimes filled with fireballs. The Northern Taurids typically peak every seven years—2015 is the peak year.

Leonids: Nov. 5 – 30, Maximum Nov. 17 – 18

This meteor shower is expected to be weak, about 15 per hour. Mark your calendar for the year 2031—it’s going to rev-up then!

Geminids: Dec. 4 – 16; Maximum Dec. 13 – 14

The Geminids often produce the best meteors of the year in terms of numbers and beauty. Expect bright, colored fireballs.
