Vet Tech Rescues 10 Guinea Pigs In Lake Forest

Ten guinea pigs were rescued thanks to a Lake Forest vet tech and the guys at Pep Boys. And yes, the cavies are up for adoption.

LAKE FOREST, CA — A vet tech's misfortune with a dead battery turned into a lucky day for a box of guinea pigs in Lake Forest.

Workers at a Lake Forest area Pep Boys discovered a box of guinea pigs as they were taking out the trash. Not knowing what else to do, they brought the little beasties inside. Hours later, a customer wandered in seeking help with a dead battery. Her name was Sydney Drennen, a vet tech with South Orange County Animal Hospital, who'd arrived straight from work.

"One of the guys helping me noticed I was an animal hospital vet assistant, by my badge," she told Patch. "That's when he asked if he could show me the box of guinea pigs."

There were 10 of the sweet creatures inside a large cardboard box. All appeared to be in good health and of varying ages.

"He asked me if we might take them," she said. After conferring with the vets at her hospital, Drennan collected the cavies and brought them in for a little triage, care and conferring on what to do next.

Though South Orange County Animal Hospital is not an exotic animal hospital, the vets have decided to rehome the critters, reaching out to Lake Forest locals through social media channels.

"Some are big, and some are babies," Drennan said. "We plan on finding them new homes."

Each guinea pig will be paired, either two boys or two girls, for all who wish to provide a safe and loving home.

When it comes to guinea pigs, one plus one doesn't equal two. Not for long, anyway.

"We figure the guinea pigs just multiplied, and perhaps someone didn't know what to do with all of them," she told Patch.

When you are faced with such a situation, you can always take animals to the Orange County Animal Care Center or your local vet, who can help you make the best choice.

A dumpster behind a car parts store should never be the answer.

As for the guineas? They're a lucky box of cavies.

"Guinea pigs make fantastic pets," she said.

And yes, her car is running much better now.
