LIVERMORE, CA — Livermore Police are contracting with private firm Legion 13th Security to help enforce parking time limits downtown.

One extra officer a day will work to enforce existing parking time limits downtown, LPD spokesperson Azenith Smith told Patch in an email. Starting this week, violators could face fines of up to $55 for spending too long in a parking spot. Many parking garages have 24-hour limits, while most spaces are limited to two hours.

“A strong parking enforcement plan will contribute to the timely turnover of parking spaces and increase the availability of spaces for downtown patrons. Please help spread the word about following the parking time limits while parking downtown,” Livermore police said in an online post that received several exasperated, pessimistic responses.

“Can’t wait to see how this manages to go [absurdly] wrong,” one commenter wrote.

“In other words, don’t go downtown,” another person wrote.

“Well, this is a disheartening comment,” Livermore Downtown Inc. replied. “This enforcement comes at the request of the businesses who need our support. The time limits are not new and we are grateful to the City for supporting our downtown businesses. We sure hope you’ll continue to do so as well.”

Livermore Downtown then noted the upcoming addition of 452 new parking spaces with the L Street Parking Garage, which broke ground in fall 2022 and is planned to open in fall 2024.

Smith said that the increased parking enforcement was proposed by the city’s Community Development Department and is tied to construction of the garage, which is impacting parking downtown.
