Unattended Toddler Struck By Car On Major LA Thoroughfare

It wasn't immediately clear how a toddler came to be wandering in the street shortly before midnight.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A toddler is in critical condition after wandering unattended onto a major Los Angeles thoroughfare and being struck by a car shortly before midnight Monday.

Police are investigating the circumstances that led up to the tragic accident in South Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Police Department officers were called to West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Halldale Avenue minutes before midnight to investigate the crash. The driver of a sedan heading westbound struck the child and remained at the scene.

The driver cooperated with police, and drugs and alcohol were not believed to be a factor. The driver was detained and released, said LAPD Officer Charles Miller.

"The infant was transported to the hospital in critical conditions, and we have no updates at this time," Miller said Tuesday.

Authorities were investigating the circumstances that led to the child being unattended on the street at midnight, but no arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon.
