Woman Killed In Hit And Run While Trying To Help Cat, Police Say

A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a 60-year-old woman while she tried to help a cat lying in the street, police said.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a 60-year-old woman who was trying to help a cat lying down in a South Los Angeles road, the Los Angeles Police Department announced Tuesday.

The fatal incident was reported about 2:50 a.m. Monday, police said. The victim stopped her vehicle with the hazard lights facing southbound on Crenshaw Boulevard, just south of Coliseum Street.

She exited her vehicle to care for a cat that was laying in the roadway, police said.

The suspect's vehicle drove southbound on Crenshaw Boulevard and changed lanes to avoid colliding with the victim’s vehicle, striking the victim, police said.

"The suspect pulled over to the side of the road, exited her vehicle and recovered a car part that came off her vehicle from the accident," police said. "The suspect observed the pedestrian lying on the roadway, and left the location failing to render aid."

The Los Angeles Fire Department pronounced her dead at the scene, police said. The victim's information was not released yet pending notification of family.

Investigators have located the suspect vehicle and it is currently held for evidence, police said.

Authorities are asking the public for any information connected to the incident.

On April 15, 2015, the City Council amended the Los Angeles Administrative Code and created a Hit and Run Reward Program Trust Fund. A reward of up to $50,000 is available to community members who provide information leading to the offender’s identification, apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise.
