MARINA DEL REY, CA — A strong, south swell is expected to bring dangerous rip currents and big waves to Marina del Rey and the Los Angeles County Coast, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency issued a beach hazards warning Tuesday through Wednesday night for LA beaches, along with the Ventura County Coast, Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands. South and southwest facing beaches could see an elevated surf of waves up to 3 to 6 feet, with occasional larger and more powerful wave sets.

"Some of the larger waves may overflow low-lying areas near the beach, including some beach parking lots," the NWS reports.

Swimmers and surfers are warned to use caution due to an increased risk of drowning, the agency says.

"Rip currents can pull swimmers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore," the NWS reports. "Very isolated and minor flooding of beaches around Zuma is possible during the evening high tides."

People are advised to remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers.

"Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks," the agency says.
