Theft Suspect From Martinez Nabbed After North Bay Police Chase

The man is accused of smashing Walmart glass case with hammer, stealing jewelry & leading cops on high-speed chase, officials said.

AMERICAN CANYON, CA — A 34-year-old Martinez man was arrested Friday morning after leading police on a high-speed chased from American Canyon to Vallejo following a jewelry theft reported at the Walmart Supercenter in American Canyon, officials said.

Officers were called shortly before 6:30 a.m. after an individual allegedly used a hammer to break the retailer's glass jewelry case and stole several pieces of jewelry, according to the American Canyon Police Department.

"Before ACPD units could conduct a traffic stop, the suspect fled at a high rate of speed and a pursuit ensued down into Vallejo," police said.

"The short chase came to an end when the suspect took a turn just a little too fast and too furious and the vehicle ... drifted into a pole," the agency said.

Desjuan Lateri Sr. was arrested, medically cleared and booked into Napa County Department of Corrections on several felony charges and a $50,000 bail. No injuries were reported, officials said.
