STANFORD, CA — Detectives in Santa Clara County are investigating the death of a baby who was found unresponsive inside a Stanford University apartment Monday morning, and police say preliminary evidence does not suggest foul play.

According to the sheriff's office, the Stanford Department of Public Safety notified investigators that an infant was not breathing inside a campus apartment on Barnes Court around 11:30 a.m. Police said first responders started CPR immediately upon arrival and rushed the baby to a nearby hospital. The 5-month-old child was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m.

Deputies, detectives, and crime scene investigators responded to the scene, along with members of the Medical Examiner-Coroner and District Attorney's offices. The sheriff's office said an initial investigation suggested the death was an accident.
