SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Santa Rosa Junior College has extended its campus closure and remote learning program through May 23 to comply with the Bay Area's extended shelter-in-place order, the college announced Wednesday.

The college suspended in-person classes and closed its doors on March 12. Wednesday's extension came one day after several Bay Area counties, including Sonoma County, extended their shelter-in-place orders through at least May 3 in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

"Until the coronavirus pandemic is no longer a threat to our community, SRJC requests students and members of the public remain away from all SRJC facilities, including athletic fields and other outdoor spaces," the college said in a news release. "While the college’s continued goal is to be a resource for our community, it must currently do so in remote formats only."

SRJC President Frank Chong encouraged the public to stay away from campus while facilities are closed.

“For over 100 years we have consistently invited the community to our campuses. SRJC is typically a place where people can connect during times of crisis,” Chong said in a statement. “But now, the best way we can support one another is to remain at a safe distance.”
